This is a large part of our decorative concrete work. A decorative patio can turn an unused corner of the yard into a place where people actually want to sit, entertain, and spend time outside.

Stamped and decorative finishes can also give homeowners more design choices than standard gray concrete while maintaining the practicality of a poured slab.

Walkways

Front walkways, side-yard paths, connections from the driveway to the patio, and garden paths can all benefit from decorative concrete.

Decorative walkways provide a finished look while creating a defined, durable walking surface. Walkways can also be installed alongside a patio project so the surfaces work together visually.

Pool Decks

Pool decks require more than choosing a pattern. Drainage, surface texture, exposure to pool chemicals, and slip resistance all matter.

Depending on the project, we can install broom-finished, textured, or decorative concrete around pool areas. When a stamped finish is being considered, the pattern and surface treatment need to make sense for an area that will regularly get wet.

Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete is poured concrete that's pressed with a pattern while it's still workable. Depending on the selected pattern, it can create the appearance of flagstone, slate, brick, or wood.

It's one of the most common decorative finishes and can provide the look of individual stone or pavers while maintaining a poured concrete surface.

Decorative and Textured Concrete

Not every decorative project needs an elaborate stamped pattern. Texture, borders, finish details, and the layout of the concrete itself can change the appearance of a patio, walkway, or pool deck.

We'll review the available options with you based on the property, how the surface will be used, and the look you're trying to achieve.

Paver Patios

Paver patios are a separate hardscaping option rather than a type of decorative concrete. Individual concrete or stone pavers are installed over a prepared and compacted base.

Pavers offer a wide range of shapes, patterns, and colors, and individual units can be replaced if repairs are ever needed. If you're deciding between decorative concrete and paver installation, we can talk through the advantages of each based on your project rather than assuming one is always the better choice.

Fire Pit Areas

Fire pit installation can also be incorporated into an outdoor living project. When a patio and fire pit are planned together, layout, elevations, drainage, seating space, and surrounding surfaces can all be considered as part of the overall design.

Base preparation, forms and steel reinforcement in place before a concrete pour

The decorative part is what you see, but much of what determines whether the concrete lasts is what you don't see. Proper preparation below the finished surface matters just as much as the pattern or texture on top.

Here's how we approach the work:

1. Site Evaluation

We come out, look at the property, talk through what you want, and figure out what's realistic for the site. Drainage, soil conditions, slope, layout, and access all matter before we prepare the estimate.

2. Preparation and Grading

We excavate as needed, install and compact appropriate base material for the project, and grade the area for drainage.

Poor base preparation or drainage can contribute to settlement, movement, cracking, and premature deterioration, so this work is addressed before the concrete is poured.

3. Forms and Reinforcement

Wood or metal forms establish the shape and elevations. Reinforcement such as rebar or wire mesh is used when appropriate for the project.

Reinforcement, slab design, control joints, base preparation, and concrete placement all work together to help manage cracking and support long-term performance.

4. Pour and Finish

Concrete gets poured, leveled, and finished. If it's stamped, the pattern is applied while the concrete is still workable. Other decorative or textured finishes are applied according to the selected design and installation method.

5. Curing and Sealing

Concrete needs time to cure properly. When a sealer is appropriate for the selected finish, it can be applied to help protect the surface and maintain its appearance.

6. Final Walkthrough

We walk the project with you, answer questions, and review the completed work. If something needs attention, we address it.

A stamped patio with a beautiful pattern can still develop problems if the preparation underneath it wasn't done correctly.

A decorative finish won't make up for poor installation. Every project starts with proper preparation before the concrete is poured. That's what helps patios, walkways, pool decks, and other decorative concrete surfaces hold up through Maryland weather.

That includes proper grading, a compacted base, an appropriate concrete mix and slab design, reinforcement where needed, properly placed control joints, and adequate curing time.

How long does a decorative concrete patio last?

Is decorative concrete slippery?

It depends on the finish.

Broom-finished and appropriately textured concrete can provide good traction, while some smoother finishes or heavily sealed surfaces may become more slippery when wet. We'll discuss surface texture and intended use when planning patios, walkways, and pool areas.

How much does decorative concrete cost compared with pavers?

The cost depends on the size and layout of the project, excavation and base requirements, site access, selected concrete finish, paver selection, borders, drainage, and other design details.

Stamped concrete and pavers have different installation methods and long-term characteristics, so we prefer to price the actual options for your property rather than use a fixed percentage comparison.

How long does installation take?

Installation time depends on project size, site preparation, access, complexity, weather, and the selected finish.

We'll explain the anticipated work schedule before the project begins and separately explain the curing time required before the concrete should be put into normal use.

Can you put decorative concrete over an existing patio?

Sometimes an existing slab can be incorporated into a new project, but the right approach depends on its condition, elevation, drainage, cracking, settlement, and the type of finish being considered.

If the existing concrete is cracked, heaved, badly settled, or pitched incorrectly, removing it and starting with proper preparation may be the better long-term solution. We'll inspect what's there before recommending an approach.

Do you handle permits?

Permit requirements depend on the project scope, property, municipality, structural work, and whether the work affects a right-of-way or other regulated area.

We'll identify permit considerations during project planning and address required permits when they apply to the work.

What kind of maintenance does decorative concrete need?

Keep the surface clean and follow the maintenance recommendations for the specific finish and sealer used on your project.

Resealing may be appropriate periodically depending on the surface and exposure. Avoiding harsh deicing salts can also help protect exterior concrete during Maryland winters.
