What Stamped Concrete Includes

Stamped concrete starts as poured concrete.

Before the concrete fully cures, patterns are pressed into the surface using specialized stamping tools. Depending on the selected stamped-concrete system, available color and finish options may also be incorporated into the project.

After the surface has cured sufficiently, an appropriate sealer may be applied to help protect the finish and enhance its appearance.

The finished surface can resemble natural stone, brick, slate, cobblestone, wood, or other decorative materials.

Unlike individual pavers or natural-stone pieces, stamped concrete is installed as a continuous poured surface rather than as individual units.

A finished stamped-concrete surface begins with what happens beneath it.

Uneven or poorly prepared ground can contribute to settlement, movement, drainage problems, and cracking. Proper site preparation is therefore one of the most important parts of the installation process.

Site Preparation and Grading

The project area is evaluated for access, drainage, existing surfaces, grading, layout, and preparation requirements.

The base is prepared according to the project conditions before concrete placement begins.

Forming and Concrete Placement

Forms establish the dimensions and shape of the project.

Concrete is then placed according to the project design and site conditions.

Finishing and Stamping

The selected finish system is applied according to the project specifications.

Stamping takes place while the concrete is at the appropriate stage of set so the selected pattern and texture can be transferred to the surface.

Control Joints

As concrete cures and responds to temperature and moisture changes, cracking can occur.

Control joints are installed to help encourage shrinkage cracking to occur at planned locations rather than randomly across the surface.

Control joints reduce the risk of uncontrolled cracking but cannot guarantee that every crack will occur within a joint.

Curing and Sealing

Concrete requires time and suitable conditions to cure.

After the surface has cured sufficiently, an appropriate sealer may be applied based on the selected finish and product requirements.
